About this book
The must-have guide for the collector of mechanical wristwatches. Complete information--including prices--on over 1,400 models made by more than 130 international brands. The eighteenth edition of what has become a classic for afficionados of fine watchmaking once again looks at the developments in the watch industry. In addition to the A-to-Z section, which features many new entries, industry expert Elizabeth Doerr looks at news from the independent watchmakers. Watchmaker Bill Yao, owner of Mk II watches, contributes his expertise on crowns, and senior editor Marton Radkai explores the business side of the industry, the problem of counterfeiting, and profiles watchmaking’s mavericks. Also included are a glossary and a guide to watch maintenance. Wristwatch Annual 2016 presents a broad range of wristwatches with exquisite color photographs and complete specifications for each watch. Collectors have a wealth of information close at hand: the book is arranged alphabetically by producer, and within each producer’s section are a brief history of the brand (with contact information), and specifications and materials for each watch, including price, movement, special features, complications, case, dial, band, and variations. The clear photography, structured layout, and lively writing make this book a pleasure to read or just browse. It is conceived as a handy reference for a broad readership from around the world, from the neophyte to the experienced collector.

The World's Most Expensive Watches

Creator: Ariel Adams | Antiques & Collectibles - 2014-09

The World's Most Expensive Watches presents some of the most extravagant, intricate, collectible, decadent, or just plain interesting modern-day timepieces that sit at the top of the price spectrum.

Publisher: ACC Distribution

About this book
More than a fashion accessory or means to tell the time, the wristwatch has become a statement of identity; politician or celebrity, scientist or sportsman, what you choose to wear on your wrist speaks volumes about who you are. The World's Most Expensive Watches presents some of the most extravagant, intricate, collectible, decadent, or just plain interesting modern-day timepieces that sit at the top of the price spectrum. Starting at a threshold price of about $200,000, it is a trip through the last decade or so of watches whose values soar incredibly to prices of $5 million dollars or more. Additionally, there is a selection of notable watches that yielded extremely high prices at auction - many of which are historically relevant. A stunning collection that is both informative and entertaining; with detailed descriptions of individual watches and articles that usefully deconstruct the price tag with an explanation of the relevance of craftsmanship and complexity of design, as well as the importance of exclusivity, prestige and collectibility. Prepare to be impressed by a larger-than-life-look at some relatively small items that command not only huge prices but kudos and respect, in all areas of a global society fascinated with using accessorizing to create identity.

    Pilot approved.

I'm a pilot, and I love this watch. The white numbers on a black watch face/bezel with red accents really makes this watch stand out. The E6B bezel rotates smoothly, but firmly and does not move easily once set (good thing). The numbers are small, but they are clearly legible due to the fact that they contrast nicely against the black face. This makes calculating Dist./Time/Fuel burn calculations quick and easy. This watch is very well made and looks/feels more expensive than $200. The chronograph is accurate and responsive and ticks about five times a second which makes it look like it's counting smoothly, as opposed to having it tick every second. The actual watch face is depressed into the watch and is lower than the hands, as well as the inner and outer bezel rings. It looks great. The setup was simple and the instructions were clear. I had to charge the watch out of the package, but after a day in the sun, it was ready to go and I have not seen the low... 5/5 Junstar - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Seiko hit the target with this model for me. 5 stars all the way...

I begin this review with my personal preference for a watch as a reflection of why I purchased this particular watch. The watch has to be subtle (not flashy like LOOK-AT-ME! ARE YOU LOOKING?), is consistent with timekeeping, has chronograph functions, displays some form of contrasting color scheme for my visual perception, and affordable (under $250) with the features it can offer. This watch met my preference.Absolutely a great watch for both everyday wear and special-night-out wear. The design of the watch is very strikingly masculine yet subtle, unlike the flashy watches with huge faces nowadays. I'm glad the affordable brands such as Seiko, Citizen, Timex, and Casio are still following the traditional route and not too caught up with extreme fashion trends.Functionality, this watch is very versatile as it has ways to help you calculate and estimate measurements such as basic math to unit conversions. (That is all I have tried so far, although I know there... 5/5 Kingston - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) A great watch meeting all expectations

I've had this watch for about a month now and love it. It is my everyday casusal watch.Upon recieiving it, I found it to be easy to set and get started. I let it sit in the sun for about an hour before I started using it and have had no problems. As a prior reviewer has stated, the red markings on the rotating bezel are almost impossible to see and use, but they look nice. I can use them only when wearing reading glasses - a younger person may have less of a problem. I have had no issues with the stem coming out and stopping the watch, as another reviewer has pointed out. The stem seems to stay where you you put it.The stopwatch uses a red sweep hand which is highly visible and works very well. I do not use the alarm, but the alarm dial can be used as an alternate time zone clock which is very useful. Finally, this is very much a man's watch. It has a larger dial and feels heavier on the wrist that it actually is. My normal Seiko dress watch (a very... 5/5 Amazon Customer (Raleigh, NC) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I absolutely love it already

5/5 Todd - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC139 Excelsior Gunmetal and Silver-Tone Stainless Steel Solar Watch (Watch) Just got this watch for myself in the mail the other day. Got to say, I absolutely love it already. Being 5 ft 5 in tall and with a small wrist, I was a bit hesitant about buying it but I took a chance due to the slick look and overall design. If you see the attached picture, that is how it looks on my wrist. The links are fairly easy to remove using simply a paperclip as mentioned in one of the other reviews. If you look on the back of the links, there are double arrows which indicates the direction in which the links should be pushed. Setting the watch itself is pretty easy and is explained in the manual included. The watch does add a bit of weight to your wrist but it is not bad at all., November 5, 2014

Clasp is better than my old Rolex, but it's 30 years old. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 16, 2016

4/5 E.C. (Green Oak, Michigan) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC143 Stainless Steel Solar Watch with Link Bracelet (Watch) The watch coloring is not as pictured. I purchased based off another reviewer here who said the picture was incorrect also and that the band was a deep black. It looks matte in the picture but it extremely glossy and more gunmetal with the accent color having a hint of gold. The glass is highly reflective which is not unusual at this price point but the face is difficult to read because of the reflection. It is a nice looking watch but difficult to read especially the numbering for the tachymeter. If the coloring was more representative of what is in the picture seems like it would be much easier to read.Pretty heavy but if you like a heavy watch not a bad thing., November 10, 2015

A little heavy but very sharp

4/5 THE Reviewer (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC143 Stainless Steel Solar Watch with Link Bracelet (Watch) These are a bit on the heavy size and come in around 5.82oz (with all links). For me, that's a little too much on the wrist. The dial is sharp with lots of dials and accents.I'm taking 1 star off because 1) the chronometer takes 0.5 seconds to reset back to 0 secs. When you're timing laps this is a huge pain.2) I wish the date dial had a magnification. This isn't a cheap watch, so I don't know why it was included.Band is 20mm wide;Case diameter + crown: 46.8mm wide (looks good on most mens hands)Case thickness: 12mmWeight: 5.82oz (Slightly heavy, even for stainless steel.)Overall it's a nice design although a little cluttered., September 16, 2016

Amazing watch at a great price

5/5 Marcus - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC143 Stainless Steel Solar Watch with Link Bracelet (Watch) As a beginning watch collector, I decided this would be a great center piece to my collection. I couldn't be any happier with this watch. It is a little darker than in the picture kind of resembles a shiny gun metal, which is exactly what I was looking for. Very light weight solid time piece i have had almost 2 months now and I have not had to change the time yet. Very accurate chronograph feature. Great watch for those looking for a quality piece. Classic Men's Watch that Ladies Would Love Too

5/5 Beach Girl (Louisiana) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC002 Two-Tone Stainless Steel Bracelet Watch (Watch) I am very pleased with this watch so far. I have been looking for a classic two-tone men's watch that is not gaudy or too "manly" looking and I think this one fits that description. I took it to my local jeweler to have 4 links removed to fit my female wrist. Even though it looks like it would be heavy, it is actually extremely comfortable to wear. I keep this in a jewelry drawer and even though it is solar powered I have not had any issues with it not receiving enough light. I normally wear it 3 or 4 times a week so I guess that amount of time exposed to light is enough to keep it going., September 17, 2015

This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC002 Two-Tone Stainless Steel Bracelet Watch (Watch) Gifted my husband with this watch for his birthday. He was thrilled! It is even more eye catching than the picture shows. My husband easily had it set in no time and has been wearing it daily ever since. Looks very nice for work and dress affairs. Of course being a Seiko quality was a given. My husband has owned several over the years and has never been disappointed. Highly recommend this particular model. Looking forward to not having to worry about battery replacement with the solar power. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 12, 2014

Disappointed... not easy to see the time.

2/5 Nes Lax - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC002 Two-Tone Stainless Steel Bracelet Watch (Watch) Although the watch looks great, Seiko missed out on the main purpose in having a watch when they designed this one - it's to be able to see the time at a glance!!! This particular watch has so many things on its face and they're not properly placed. It looks nice in the picture, but when it's actually on your wrist it's hard to see where the hands are. The word, "SEIKO" on the 3 o'clock position could easily be mistaken as one of the hands. I've had Seiko watches before and I was happy with them. This one is a big disappointment!!! Few shortcomings but overall excellent!

I really like the all black/white of the face, it's very sharp. The arabic numerals are giant so it's easy to read and they have lume as well as the hour/minute hands. Also the chronograph second hand sweeps which is unique for a quartz watch. The bracelet was ok, I switched it with the seiko nylon strap which I think goes great with this watch. It's solar powered which is great because I don't have to worry about batteries or whether I'm wearing it enough.I would prefer if the case was a bit thinner. The date is far too recessed into it's little whole and is impossible to read at a glance(you have to really look, and in low light situations it's basically impossible to read). Also the chronograph only goes up to 60 minutes and then stops. The 24hr dial is nice but I think an hour counter for the chronograph would have been more useful. Also the tachymeter numerals are upside down on the bottom half of the watch, which makes sense with a rotating bezel but since this bezel... 4/5 kd - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great watch that's easy to read

5/5 Shacked - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Seiko Men's SSC229 Sport Solar-Power Stainless Steel Bracelet Watch (Watch) As I'm getting older my vision isn't as good as it used to be and I found myself squinting to see the time on my watches. Did an extensive search to find a larger face watch with a clean, easy to read face, which lead me to this watch. Was torn between the stainless steel and the black ion and decided to go with the stainless because I read the black ion starts wearing away.Nice big face, easy to read, nice weight to it where you know you are wearing a watch and not a boat anchor. It's solar so no battery changes. I have 2 other Seiko solar watches which have been running perfect for years and I don't expect this one to be any different. The only knock I have against it is no Sapphire crystal but the price reflects it., February 5, 2016
